Great post, Ashley! I have a hard time coming up with ways social networking can work with younger elementary students. You have some excellent examples here with ideas on ways to use social networking and social media in a school setting. I take lots of pictures of my students throughout the year... why not save them to a classroom networking site, and allow my students to use the pictures to create slide shows of themselves. All of our students must have a permission form signed at the beginning of the year which allow pictures, artwork, etc to be posted to the internet, so that part would be taken care of. Privacy would still be of some concern, but there are plenty of resources, like the sites in the "Secure social networking" article to help in that area. Like with anything else that our students, and teachers for that matter, become involved with at school, there must be some guidelines and consequences if they are not followed. However, with the endless possibilities of including social networking and social media sites, why not at least give it a try?
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn’t realize that there were so many different social media sites. You did an excellent job showcasing some I’ve never even heard of. Until recently I tried to avoid socializing on the internet. However my company had a contest going on and we were strongly encouraged to sign up. Needless to say, I’m hooked now. I haven’t heard from or seen some many family and friends in years. I don’t agree with everything they post out there, but I know it can be better utilized in our schools. Thanks for showing how these sites can better serve our students and faculty in a positive manner. I’m looking forward to trying some of these out. I kind of like Pinterest because it has the answer on how to do almost anything, it’s very busy though.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love how your gave examples of all the ways you can use social networking in the library. I had my notepad out taking notes. I want to try kizoa and tumblr. Those are both new to me. I viewed the schools your posted and loved the way they were using this powerful resource. What a great way to introduce the library to students at the first of the year. I am currently creating videos using Adobe Voice but haven't decided how to publish these. This gives me some great ideas about how I might want to pursue this further. Again, I really appreciated the actual links to media centers so that I can see for myself examples of social media being used.
ReplyDeleteI love how you used visuals of all the social networking platforms that are available for use to promote school media centers as well as how you gave an explanation of each social networking platform along with link to specific schools to show how they use social networking. The school I used to work at was an elementary school and they created a Facebook page to inform parents and the community of the wonderful things that are happening at the school. I can see how some social networking sites would be geared more toward elementary and others toward middle and high school. For example, I like how Creekside High School uses a Twitter feed to inform students of all the happenings in the media center, school and community. Also, I like how Newburg Middle School used YouTube to create an orientation video for all students to view so they can become familiar with how the media center operates. What a GREAT idea!! I am not very familiar with Kizoa, Vine or Tumblr but will definitely look into the benefits of using them to promote school library media centers. I LOVE Pinterest and all of the ideas that are shared by educators and for educators. Thank you again for the valuable insight you have provided on social networking platforms and their positive use for promoting school media centers
ReplyDeleteI like how you added lots of pictures and described how each social media site can be used by teachers and media specialists. I have heard of most of them but a few were new to me. In most of the examples, high school or middle schools are using accounts like twitter and facebook. I definitely think this is a great way to connect with those students since that is how they connect with each other. It's easy to like a facebook page or follow a twitter account to receive the latest news and happenings. For the younger students, I don't think these would be as beneficial. Maybe they would be more for their parents to follow. Pinterest is one of my favorite sites. It has great ideas for education! The best part is that with everyone searching and posting ideas, it saves each individual from having to scour the web. That's not to say that I don't spend way too much time searching on Pinterest! One issue that has come up at my school is student access to some of these sites. I like the idea of posting videos for students on youtube, but they are often blocked by our filters. I cannot even get on to some of the social sites while on my school's network. With the internet not having any type of regulation of what can be posted, it can be dangerous for students to have free reign of these sites especially. Technology and the internet are awesome tools for schools to use, yet need to be closely monitored to protect students.
